Partner Schools of the Ulricianum

Walther-Rathenau Gymnasium Bitterfeld, Germany
Ulricianum and the Walther-Rathenau Gymnasium in Bitterfeld, Sachsen-Anhalt, have been partner schools for over ten years. The partnership began in 1990 as a way to bring east and west Germany together and promote a mutual understanding, tolerance, and respect for schools from both sides of the country. Now the partnership is centered around a joint ecology project where students discuss and analyze issues of the environment. There is a yearly exchange program in place involving the ecology courses of each school, as well as music and theater exchanges.

Newquay Tretherras School, Cornwall, England
There has been an intensive partnership program with the Newquay Tretherras School since April, 1980. The program includes a normal student-exchange, communal newspaper, music and art projects, cooperation in the Comenius-Projekt, as well as a profession internship exchange for students in the 11th grade. After 20 successful years, the exchange has changed somewhat, because the Newquay Tretherras School no longer offers German language instruction. This is an unfortunate decision given the effective work in this program with over 1,000 participants in the last 20 years. But there is a glimpse of hope for future exchange students from Aurich-the Treviglas Community College in Newquay has shown interest in a partnership, since German is offered there as a mandatory foreign language requirement.

Redruth School, Cornwall, England
http://www.redruth.cornwall.sch.uk/
The Redruth school is a partner in the Comenius Project. They describe their participation in this project with the following… Redruth School has recently been given the chance to join a group of European schools from Aurich Germany, Nesbru Norway, Kepno Poland, Wroclaw Poland, Newquay Tretherras and Pribram in the Czech Republic who have been involved in a European sponsored project called “COMENIUS”. All the schools will be taking part in a music festival to be held in Pribram next May. Prior to the festival each school will submit pieces of music for a CD to be produced in Cornwall with the front cover for the CD being designed by art students from Redruth. We are hoping to take 10 students from Redruth School, along with peripatetic teachers, and they will work and live alongside students from the other participating European countries. They will be involved in music workshops, performing several concerts as well as visiting places of interest including Prague.

Lycee Luneville, France
The partnership between the Lycee Luneville France and Ulricianum has existed since 2001, after the conclusion of a partnership with another French school in Grasse. Since then, students have participated in week-long exchange programs at the schools, the last meeting occurring in April 2004 in Aurich. Both schools are looking forward to many more exchanges with each other.

Piter Jelles Montessori in Leeuwarden, Netherlands
http://www.piterjellesmontessori.nl/
There has been a partnership with Piter Jelles Montessori in Leeuwarden since 1999. Ulricianum had had partnerships with schools in England, Poland, and France, but never with our nearest neighbor, the Netherlands. The school was thus very happy finally to establish contact with a Dutch school, after years of trying. The partnership has resulted, among other things, in a band exchange between the schools in spring of 2004, in which student rock bands held concerts at each school. An online newspaper, The Frisian Times, also chronicles the partnership between the schools and life and times in both east and west Frisia. The latest edition of the newspaper is available at http://www.ulricianum-aurich.de/leeuwarden/index.htm.

Liceum Ogolnoksztalcaçe, Kepno, Poland
Since september 1994 there has been a very active partnership with the Liceum Ogolnoksytalcace in Kepno (pronounced ‘Kerpno’). Not only do the German and Polish students participate in exchanges, but also parent representatives, faculty, and the school leaders and administrations. Under the auspices of the Comenius project, the relationship has been immeasurably strengthened. Ulricianum students and faculty value this partnership as an important step in creating a positive German-Polish relationship. As one of the Polish students expressed at the first meeting of the two schools in 1994, “A student exchange program such as this is an important contribution to German-Polish understanding and thus to a strong European community.
